SA 88-11 Signing request - Espresso Limousine -
Hxpresso Limousine 1645 S. Bascom Ave. - C-2-S (General
Com ercial) Zoning District.
Planning Director Kee reviewed the Staff Report of Aprii 26. 1988, noting
that, as a result of the Site and Architectural Review Committee meeting,
Staff is recommending approval of a temporary sign for 60 days. This
temporary sign is to be attached to the existing freestanding sign at the
front of the site, and is subject to Staff approving its location.
Commissioner Olorewski reported that this item was considered by the Site
and Architectural Review Committee. The Committee is recommending
approval of a temporary sign as specified by Mr. Kee. Additionally, the
Committee recommends that the a -frame sign be denied.

appearance.
3. Movable signs tend to clutter the streetscape and often become
obstacles to pedestrians and vehicles.
4. The placement of A -frame signs encourages other businesses to place
signs without City approval.

Expresso Limousine 1645 S. Bascom Ave. - C-2-S (General
Commercial) Zoning District.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
That the Planning Commission adopt the attached findings and determine
that the A -frame sign is in violation of City ordinance and DENY this
request.
STAFF DISCUSSION
The applicant has established a new business (limousine service) in the
rear of an office complex and placed an A. -frame sign near the street for
exposure. Staff notifijd him of the violation and application has been
submitted requesting an approval of the sign for two months. Attached is
a letter from the applicant stating that the sign is needed until a new
multi -tenant, freestanding sign can be constructed.
It has been City Ordinance not to allow A -frame, movable type signs for
the following reasons:
1. The City wants permanent, well -designed signs to enhance its
appearance.
2. Movable signs tend to clutter the streetscape and often become
obstacles to pedestrians and vehicles.
3. The placement of A -frame signs encourages other businesses to
place signs without City approval.
Staff cannot support the request for the reasons cited above. It is
Staff's opinion that if the applicant needs major street exposure, a space
should be leased with such exposure. The City faces setting an
undesirable precedent by approving this request and thereby being
obligated to approve other similar requests. A sign near the entrance to
the business has been approved and a multi -tenant sign near the street is
certainly possible.

I was informed that I was able to display a Grand Opening sign in front of
the building for two months by the owner, Mr. Joe White.
The building is located on private property and we do not have access to
display a sign. I recently put in a request to The Planning Conmision
for a sign and it was declined. I was told I could put a sign up in the
front of the building, so if it is still a problem 1 would like to have
the matter heard before the Planning Carmdsion.

This is in violation f Section 21.53.030 of the Campbell Municipal
Code.
Please be advised that within three working days, (on or before April

removed by this date, the City will remove the sign(s) and bill you
for the cost of removal. You may contest the removal of the sign(s)
by submitting a written request to the Planning Director specifying
the reasons you believe the sign(s) to be legal. The matter will
