Subject: Sign application for Chevron station at 1589 S. Bascom
Dear Mr. Ibrahim,
The sign application submitted by you for the above mentioned address is approved
with the following one exception: the wording on both sides of the cashier's booth
which reads, "24 hrs" is not approved, and must be removed as it appears to have
been erected without approval. It is considered as advertising. The wording,
"Cashier", may remain as it is considered to be directional signing under 6 sq. ft in
size.
The sign application approval includes:
1. Removal of advertising signs which were erected without approval,
including the pump -top signs, and the framed signs on both the cashier
booth and the restroom.
2. One Chevron logo on the front side of the front new spanner facing
Bascom, to be 1.9 square feet.
3. Other signs considered to be directional and within the 6 square foot
limit, which are approved are the "Restroom" sign and the "no -
parking" signs (not shown on your pians, but existing.
4. The two canopy signs previously approved by the City Council, the
"Chevron" name, on the north and south of the canopy, are to remain.
The one vending machine next to the restrooms, with the Coke signing all over it,
may remain as a service to customers, but if more are added they will become an
issue. As I noted in our phone conversations, the large inflatable Fruitopia and
Coke bottles next to the cashiers booth, which are not indicated on your plans, are
also not approved and must be removed, as should the cases of soda piled there.

If the station owner is interested in offering non -gasoline related items, Chevron
should consider an application for an indoor market building, so the site does not
have the appearance of a street vendor. Neither the City nor, I believe, Chevron
desires this image.
We would like to see the signing which should be removed, removed before the
new signing is added.
if you have any questions, please give me a call at (415) 866-2193.
Sincerely,
Barbara Schoetz Ryan /

Dear Mr. Ibrahim,
Campbell Sign Ordinance for Service Stations
The City's ordinance allows one sign only per building frontage, on a one square
foot of signage per linear foot of frontage, up to a maximum of a 50 square foot sign.
Additionally, a site may have one free-standing sign of a maximum of 50 square
feet, with a 14' height limit.
Service stations may have additional signing for gasoline pricing only, consisting of
up to two readerboard signs, up to 16 square feet in size, plus up to two portable price
signs, up to 16 square feet in size.
Review of Proposal
A review of the proposed signing revision for the Chevron station at 1589 Bascom
Avenue, at the northwest corner of Hamilton Avenue has resulted in the following
conclusions:
The number of signs proposed does not meet the requirements of Campbeli's
sign ordinance.
The canopy is considered as one building, the restroom/storage building as
another. The canopy frontage is 50+ feet facing Hamilton and 47 feet facing
Bascom. Therefore one canopy sign of 50 square feet or less may be placed on
the canopy facing Hamilton, and one of up to 47 square feet on the side of the
canopy facing Bascom. The square footage may not be woken up between
several signs. The restroom building has 4 feet of frontage facing Hamilton
and 8 feet of frontage racing Bascom. Therefore it may haver one 4 square foot
sign facing Hamilton ind one 8 square foot sign facing Bascom.
Therefore, the signs on the canopy facing north do not meet code as they are
not a street frontage; neither are any of the proposed signs facing west. One
sign only is permitted to a frontage; so it may be either on the spanner or the
canopy, but not both.
The present Chevron signs existing on the site do meet these criteria. The
70 .Y,,r,h Ian, S,—, (aml,.11 ( alilnrn 450()N 1421 irl 409 8M1fi 7140 ,aY 408 17Q 2577— ,In, 40N.96e 77QO
criteria are designed to prevent sign clutter, to give a clean image, yet allow
for quick business identification
The site plan submitted does not accurately indicate the location of the
existing signs.
There is no price sign on the southwest corner; it is on the landscaped area
between the two driveways onto Hamilton. This may be because the Delta
Queen ca*wash is adjacent, and it uses Chevron gasoline. A Chevron price
sign placed there could confuse patrons as it may appear to be on the Delta
Queen site.
Ukewise, there is no price sign on the island between the driveways facing
onto Basc-)m; the sign is in the northeast comer. This is probably due to the
height of the landscaping in the island, which would obscure a price sign
placed there.
The plan and elevations do not indicate all of the signs which are existing on
the site.
In addition to the signs indicated on the plan, there are pump- top signs on all
of the pumps, free-standing "Tectron" signs, a coke vending machine next to
the restroom which has large signs covering all sides of the machine, and two
man-sized, inflated Frutopia and Coke "bottles" next to the cashier next to a 4'
high stack of soda crates. None of these have been approved by the City. We
do not object to the use of one outside vending machine, but if the station
owner wishes t, sell additional items, he should be provided with a building
in which to enclose the items, instead of appearing to be a street vrtdor.
Some of the proposed signs and existing signs would be considered as exempt
directional signs, as long as they are 6 square feet or under.
Signs which would qualify as being exempt are
Restroom, Self -serve, Cashier, No -parking, Turn off engine, No
smoking, the number of each pump
Signs which are not considered directional are:
24 hours, Chevron, Chevron logo, and product advertising
Additional signage permitted or possible.
Up to 50% of window area may be covered by signage.
Exceptions to the.,e standards may not be granted by staff, but may be by the
Planning Commission. You would have to demonstrate to the Planning
Commission 4-at any signage which would desire which does not meet the
standards stated in the code met the following criteria:
A) The approved use (gasoline sales) is not adequately identified by the
signage permitted.
B) The site is unusually difficult to locate.
C) The use is of such a size or so located relative to buildings, trees, or
traffic, that a taller, larger or off -site sign is required.
i hope the above comments provide adequate direction to you so that you may
revise the proposal to meet both your client's and the City's requirements. If you
have any questions, please give me a call.
Sincerely,
Barbara Schoetz Ryan
