Dear Ms. Dinan:
The Community Development Director has approved your application for a Tree Removal
Permit to remove one (1) Sequoia Redwood tree with a diameter of 32-inches located in the rear
yard of property at 1074 Allen Way in the R-1-6 (Single-Family Residential) Zoning District,
subject to the following condition of approval for tree replacement:
1. The applicant is required to plant one (1) 36-inch Chinese Pistache tree in the location
specified by the approved replanting plan on or before January 12, 2005.
The Tree Removal Permit has been approved based upon the City's determination, with a
supporting recommendation by a Certified Arborist, that the tree roots are causing excessive
damage to the property and cannot be controlled or remedied through preservation and/or
preventative procedures and practices that the public health or safety requires its removal.
This approval is final in 10 calendar days, unless an appeal is received in writing at the City of
Campbell City Clerk's Office, 70 N. First Street, Campbell, on or before Thursdav. December
22. 2005 at 5:00 p.m. A written appeal must be accompanied with payment for appealing the
approval. The tree may not be removed until after the 10-day appeal period has passed and no
appeals have been received.

NOTICE OF TREE REMOVAL
PERMIT APPLICATION
Notice is hereby given that the Community Development Director of the City of
Campbell has received an application for a Tree Removal Permit (PLN2005-174) to
remove one (1) Sequoia Redwood Tree with a diameter of 32-inches located in the rear
yard of property located at 1074 Allen Way in the R-1-6 (Single-family Residential)
Zoning District (see map on reverse).
The Community Development Director will be rendering a decision after 10 calendar
days from the date of this notice. Any comments regarding this application must be
submitted to the Community Development Department before 5:00 p.m. on Friday,
December 9, 2005. Questions or comments regarding the proposed tree removal may be
addressed to Melinda M. Denis, Planner I, in the Community Development Department

Assignment
It was my assignment to inspect
the Redwood tree (Sequoia sp.) at
1074 Allen Way in Campbell, CA
(see image to right) and offer my
professional opinion as to its
current status.
Summary
This tree should have never been
planted in such a small area. Tree
roots are causing excessive
damages & the tree must be
removed & replaced.
Discussion
This Redwood has a 32" diameter
(DBH) is 20'wide & 50' tall. The
tree is in Fair - Good Health & has a Good Structure. Unfortunately this tree
species should have never been
planted in this location.
Redwoods grow into very large
trees (110' +). Incidentally, they
are notorious for having root
systems that are entirely disruptive
to concrete (see image to left).

As you can see from the images (right &
above) the Redwood has already
destroyed two sections of concrete near
the swimming pool. The roots have lifted
the concrete so much that it has created an
unacceptable hazard & that will cause
injury. The roots will continue to lift/shift
the existing concrete & shortly will
compromise the integrity of the swimming
pool walls.

Ifit were possible to cut the roots of the
Redwood & have them not re-invade the
pool area & have the Redwood not fall over, I would recommend that course of action.
Unfortunately it is impossible to safely cut the tree roots or expect them to not come back
& disrupt the concrete/pool.
The Redwood should have never been planted in such a small planting area so close to a
swimming pool.
In this situation, the best long-term solution is to remove this tree & replace it with a tree
that will never cause such damages. I have reviewed the recommended list from the City
of Campbell & recommend the Owners Plant a 48" box Chinese Pistache (or acceptable
alternative) in its place.

ARBORIST DISCLOSURE STATEMENT

treatments, like any medicine, cannot be guaranteed.
Treatment, pruning and removal of trees may involve considerations beyond the scope of the

unless complete and accurate information is disclosed to the arborist. An arborist should then
be expected to reasonably rely upon the completeness and accuracy of the information

Trees can be managed, but they cannot be controlled. To live near trees is to accept some
degree of risk. The only way to eliminate all risk associated with trees is to eliminate all
trees.
