Dear Mr. Schwartz:
This letter summarizes the results of our geotechnical engineering
services performed during construction of the open Doors Family
Housing Project in Los Gatos, California. Subsurface Consultants,
Inc. (SCI) previously performed a geotechnical investigation for
the site and presented the results in a report dated February 26,
1991. In general, services during construction consisted of
confirming that the geotechnical aspects of the project plans and
specification were followed during construction. A progress report
was presented in a letter dated July 24, 1991. This report
presents a summary of our services performed at the site including
those described in the July 1991 letter.
The project site is an irregularly shaped parcel with plan
dimensions of approximately 360 feet by 560 feet. The development
consists of constructing 68 residential units within 4 two- and
three-story wood-frame buildings with slab-on-grade floors. In
general, site grading was relatively minor, consisting of cuts up
to 1 foot deep and fills up to 2 feet. In addition, the upper 30
inches of material in building pad areas was to consist of select
fill having low expansion potential.
Mass grading of the site began in June 1992, and construction was
essentially completed in December 1992. During this time, our
engineer/technician visited the site on an intermittent basis, as
requested by the Project Manager and/or Field Superintendent, and
provided the following services:

performing in-place density tests to check that adequate
soil compaction is obtained,
3. Observing utility trench backfill and compaction,
4. Checking footing excavations for appropriate depth,
bearing materials and cleanout, and
5. Checking placement and compaction of aggregate base in
areas to be paved.
Gradinq
Our field technician was on-site on an intermittent basis during
grading. The site was initially cleared of debris and the upper
few inches of soil containing vegetation and organic material was
stripped and stockpiled. Within former basement areas, basement
soils were excavated to their full depth and recompacted to at
least 95 percent relative compaction.
In areas to receive fill, the exposed soil surface was scarified,
moisture conditioned and compacted to at least 90 percent relative

less than 15 percent and a liquid limit of less than 40 percent)
was placed within the upper 30 inches at building pads. On site
materials were used as fill elsewhere at the site. Laboratory
compaction tests and field check points were conducted in
accordance with the ASTM D1557 test method, to evaluate the optimum
moisture content and maximum dry density of fill materials. Based
on the test results, we conclude that fill materials were compacted
to at least 90 percent relative compaction.
utility and storm Drain Trenches
Our field technician intermittently observed storm drain and
utility trench backfill placement and performed tests to check
compaction. The test results indicate that the trench backfill was
compacted to at least 90 percent relative compaction. The upper
six inches of trench backfill in paved areas was compacted to at
least 95 percent.

Subqrade Preparation and Baserock Placement in Drivewavs and
Parkinq Areas
subgrade preparation and baserock placement were intermittently
observed and tested by our field technician. Initially, the upper
six inches of subgrade soil was scarified and compacted to at least
95 percent relative compaction. Aggregate base was placed in thin
layers and compacted to at least 95 percent relative compaction.
Compaction of subgrade and base materials was tested in accordance
with the ASTM 01557 test method. Prior to concrete placement, the
aggregate base was proof rolled to check that the surface was firm
and non-yielding.
Foundation Excavations
Our field technician observed shallow footing excavations for the
buildings prior to concrete placement. The foundation excavations
exposed compacted select fill. Footing excavations were clear of
loose soil and standing water prior to concrete placement.
Conclusions
Based on our observations and test results, we conclude the
geotechnical aspects of construction, performed under our
observation, were completed in accordance with project plans and
specifications. A summary of the field density test data is
attached.

Dear Building Department:
The final construction inspection of the 6" sanitary sewer main
within the Open Doors project has been completed. Our maintenance
department has verified that all construction aspects of the sewer
main and manholes comply with district standards. The brass plug
and coupler on the vertical riser (west side of the project site)
needs to be removed.
The Town of Los Gatos will assume maintenance responsibilities of
the 368' length 6" diameter main line on the east side of the
project site and the 25' section of 6" main on the west side (from
the vertical riser) once the parcel adjacent to Open Doors is
developed. A medical office complex is tentatively planned for
this parcel (south of the Open Doors site).
All on-site sewers will be privately maintained until the medical
complex is completed and connected to the 368'-6" main line.

Unless otherwise stated, the obligation of this bond shall continue in connection
with all work done or required to be done by said principal under the terms of
any such permit. The sum shown as the penalty of this bond shall be the maximum
liability hereunder. The surety may cancel this bond as to further permits by
giving written notice of its intention to do so by certified mail to the Director
of Public Works not less than thirty (30) days prior to such date of cancellation,
but such cancellation shall not alter the obligation of the surety in connection
with any permit issued by the City to the principal prior to the close of business

In the event the full penalty of this bond is exhausted, or if in the sole
opinion of the Director of Public Works of City of Campbell
