RE: Revised Paint Color
151 N. First Street (Gillman House)
Dear Melinda Denis:
Thank you for your time and effort to review the paint color selection for my building at
151 N. First Street. I apologize if my disappointment seemed rash or disrespectful of your
position. I had started this process the first week of April. Since that time I have lost one
painter due to delays and pushed back the second painter on two start dates.
I have had my practice in Campbell for 15 years and plan to retire here with my family. I
Thoroughly enjoy and respect the lovely historic nature of Campbell. I believe it is my
personal civic responsibility to maintain and preserve our historic heritage for future
generations. I have done this with the Gillman House. At my own personal expense of
several thousand dollars I have restored the exterior and interior historical integrity of this
house. The work was not required by code and includes things such as earthquake sheer
walling for the foundation, new shingle roof, removal of antenna and numerous external
air vents through walls and roof placed there by previous salon owners, matching original
internal texture, commissioning a hand carved period wooden sign to match building. It
has been a rewarding labor of love.
In the interest of historical accuracy for structure and paint historic archives have been
searched. This provided only rather recent pictures and descriptions (approximately
1985) To my knowledge no other detailed reports or pictures exist for historical guidance.
The house at 81 N. First Street, which was built at the same approximate time period as
the Gillmman House and shares similar architecture and character of structure, is painted
a very similar color as the proposed color. Per the contractor, who is currently doing
restoration and remodel addition, the existing color at 8I First Street is the original color.
At your request I have already changed the color selection. The second color selection
Chestertown BuffHC-9 was from the "Historical Color Collection" that were drawn from
18t~ and 19t~ century homes. Additionally, I selected from the color combinations
suggested which akeady contained the existing trim colors on this house, Monterey white
and Burgundy. I agree with Director's concern that the proposed color will not match the
existing light gray base color. We will use a muted dark green color suggested for
Craftsman style homes of the 1900's.
In consideration of all of the factual and historical information and in the spirit of
cooperation I have complied with your request and have lightened the color selected.
Thank you for your attention to this matter and interest in preserving the beautiful historic
character of Campbell.

Revised Paint Color
151 N. First Street
Dear Mr. Martines,
Thank you for the opportunity to review the paint color you have chosen for your building at 151
N. First Street. This property is a Historical Landmark and it is the responsibility of the
Community Development Direct and the Historic Preservation Board to review proposed
alterations to historic properties, taking into account the architecture and materials of the
building, including a change in paint color. The Campbell Historic Preservation Ordinance
states that "any exterior change to a structure, through alteration or construction, requires a
Historic Development Permit if the change is determined by the Community Development
Director to be inconsistent with the architectural style and character of the structure."
Both Sharon Fierro, Community Development Director, and myself, had the opportunity to
review the proposed paint color (Kelly Moore, Chestertown Buff, HC-9) you have selected to
replace the existing dark gray paint color. The Community Development Director has
determined that the proposed change is not consistent with the architectural style and character of
the building and requests that you lighten the color you have selected. Additionally, the Director
is concerned the proposed paint color will not complement the existing light gray base color.
Please note that any major modifications to the existing signage will require a sign permit.
Thank you for your cooperation in this matter and if you have any questions, feel free to contact
me at (408) 866-2142.

Dear Planning Commission and Campbell Historic Preservation Board:
We are requesting approval to paint the siding of The Gillman House (151 North First
Street) yellow in place of the dark gray. We have selected this color for two reasons. First
to show our support for the American troops. Second this is the color of the mustard
weed and sour grass blossoms that once blessed this valley in the orchard era as nitrogen
fixers. The trim colors will remain the same. A similar color scheme is at the new
Victorian bungalow at 88 Harrison Avenue. Enclosed are the color samples.
Thank you for your prompt response.
