STAFF RECOMMENDATION That the Historic Preservation Board take the following action: Adopt a resolution, approving the Heritage Tree Designation fora 60-inch diameter, 60 to 80-year old Redwood tree located on public property at the no~east corner of Second Street and Civic Center Drive. ~~ DISCUSSION The Historic Preservation Board has submitted an application for a Heritage Tree Designation ~r ~ fora 60-inch diameter, 60 to 80-year old Redwood, located on public property at the no~astGJ~ly corner of Second Street and Civic Center Drive. The Redwood tree is 100 feet tall and has a canopy spread of 60 feet. The Historic Preservation Board consulted with the Parks & Recreation Commission on the designation of this tree as it is located on public property (reference Attachment 2). On Apri14, 2007, the Parks & Recreation Commission supported the designation of the subject tree. If the Heritage Tree Designation is approved by the Historic Preservation Board, the City shall record the designation with the County Recorder's office and a copy shall be provided to the property owner and the Community Development Department. A listing of designated Heritage Trees and their locations shall be listed on the Historic Resources Inventory and maintained by the Community Development Department. ANALYSIS Staff is supportive of the Heritage Tree Designation of this tree based on the following f ndings: 1. It is an outstanding specimen of a desirable species. 2. It is one of significant age and/or girth in Campbell. 3. It is a native species. Prepared by: • ackie C. ng Li Acting Community Develop ent Director WHEREAS, the Redwood located on public property at the southwest corner of Second Street and Civic Center Drive was nominated as a Heritage Tree by the Historic Preservation Board; and i WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board submitted an application requesting `! consideration of this tree for Heritage Tree status; and the Parks and Recreation Commission supported the designation of this tree as a Heritage Tree; and WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board approved Heritage Tree status for this tree; and WHEREAS, this majestic Redwood is a towering 100-feet in height, with a 60-inch diameter and a 40-foot canopy spread; and WHEREAS, this stately Redwood is 60 to 80 years in age; and WHEREAS, this Redwood, a Sequoia sempervirens, is an exemplary example of a native species; and WHEREAS, the City of Campbell recognizes the substantial aesthetic, environmental and economic importance of its tree population; and has adopted Tree Protection Regulations to protect and manage trees; and ~~~„ ~~~ ,~~ ~~ ~' ~' ~ •~t~~ '' v , WHEREAS, the protection and management of the City's urban forest enhances Campbell's small town quality and character; and WHEREAS, this year is the City of Campbell's 25`h Anniversary as a "Tree City USA", which is a national recognition for the City's urban and community forestry programs; and this day is a celebration of National Arbor's Day; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Historic Preservation Board expresses their sincerest appreciation to the City of Campbell for their outstanding care and preservation of this beautiful tree, and congratulate them on the designation of this tree as the seventh Heritage Tree in the City of Campbell. ~~+""' PASSED AND ADOPTED this 25~h day of April, 2007, by acclamation. ~ ~- APPROVED: ?- ~~~4s~ '~ J le Hernandez, Chair ATTEST: ~ ~ ie oun nd, cretary `' -~
