STAFF REPORT-HISTORIC PRESERVATION BOARD
MEETING OF MAY 28, 2007
PLN2008-90 Application for a Heritage Tree Designation (PLN2008-90) for amulti-
Sassone, Brian & trunked (7 trunks) 150 year-old Live Oak tree with a 5-foot base trunk
Helen diameter, on property owned by Brian and Helen Sassone at 201 Carlyn
Avenue in a R-1-6 (Single-Family Residential) Zoning District.
STAFF RECOMMENDATION
That the Historic Preservation Board take the following action:
Adopt a resolution, approving the Heritage Tree Designation for amulti-trunked (7 trunks) 150-
year old Live Oak tree with a 5-foot base trunk diameter, on property owned by Brian and Helen
Sassone at 201 Carlyn Avenue.
DISCUSSION
The applicant has submitted an application for a Heritage Tree Designation for amulti-trunked
Live Oak tree estimated to be approximately 150 years old. The tree has a base trunk diameter of
5 feet, with seven branching trunks ranging from 12 inches to 24 inches in diameter. The tree is
approximately 50 feet in height.
If the Heritage Tree Designation is approved by the Historic Preservation Board, the City shall
record the designation with the County Recorder's office and a copy shall be provided to the
property owner and the Community Development Department. A listing of designated Heritage
Trees and their locations shall be listed on the Historic Resources Inventory and maintained by
the Community Development Department.
ANALYSIS
Staff is supportive of the Heritage Tree Designation for this tree based on the following findings:
1. It is an outstanding specimen of a desirable species.
2. It is one of significant age and/or girth in Campbell.
3. It is a native species.
4. It is on the Historic Preservation Board Tree Survey.

BEING A RESOLUTION OF THE HISTORIC PRESERVATION
BOARD OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL BESTOWING HERITAGE
TREE DESIGNATION (PLN2008-90) UPON AMULTI-TRUNKED
(7) 150 YEAR OLD LNE OAK TREE WITH A 5-FOOT BASE
TRUNK DIAMETER ON PROPERTY OWNED BY BRIAN AND
HELEN SASSONE AT 201 CARLYN AVENUE IN A R-1-6
(SINGLE-FAMILY RESIDENTIAL) ZONING DISTRICT.
APPLICATION OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL. FILE NO. PLN2008-
90.
After notification and public hearing, as specified by law, and after presentation by the
Community Development Director, proponents and opponents, the hearing was closed.
After due consideration of all evidence presented, the Historic Perseveration Board did
find as follows, with respect to PLN2008-90:
1. This multi-trunked (7) 150-year old Live Oak Tree with a 5-foot base trunk
diameter represents an outstanding specimen of a desirable species.
2. This multi-trunked (7) 150-year old Live Oak Tree with a 5-foot base trunk
diameter is one of significant age and/or girth in the City of Campbell.
3. This multi-trunked (7) 150-year old Live Oak Tree with a 5-foot base trunk
diameter is a native species.
4. This multi-trunked (7) 150-year old Live Oak Tree with a 5-foot base trunk
diameter is on the Historic Perseveration Board Tree Survey, which was completed
in 2002.
Based on the foregoing findings of fact, the Historic Preservation Board further finds and
concludes that:
1. The Live Oak tree is a native species of significant size and age, and is important to
the community.
2. No substantial evidence has been presented from which a reasonable argument
could be made that shows that the Heritage Tree Designation will have a significant
adverse impact on the environment.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Historic Perseveration Board bestows
Heritage Tree Designation (PLN2008-90) upon amulti-trunked (7) 150-year old Live

WHEREAS, a Live Oak, located in the front yard at 201 Carlyn Avenue, was nominated
as a Heritage Tree by the Historic Preservation Board; and
WHEREAS, Brian and Helen Sassone submitted an application requesting consideration
of this tree for Heritage Tree status; and
WHEREAS, the Historic Preservation Board approved Heritage Tree status for this tree;
and
WHEREAS, this majestic Oak is a towering 50-feet in height, with a 5-foot base trunk
diameter and a 75-foot canopy spread; and
WHEREAS, this stately Oak is approximately 150 years in age; and
WHEREAS, this Live Oak, genus Quercus, is an exemplary example of a native species;
and
WHEREAS, the City of Campbell recognizes the substantial aesthetic, environmental
and economic importance of its tree population; and has adopted Tree Protection
Regulations to protect and manage trees; and
WHEREAS, the protection and management of the City's urban forest enhances
Campbell's small town quality and character; and
WHEREAS, this year is the City of Campbell's 26th Anniversary as a "Tree City USA",
which is a national recognition for the City's urban and community forestry programs;
and this month is a celebration of National Historic Preservation Month; and
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the Historic Preservation Board and the
City of Campbell express their sincerest appreciation to Brian and Helen Sassone for
their outstanding care and preservation of this beautiful tree, and congratulate them on
the designation of this tree as the tenth Heritage Tree in the City of Campbell.
