BECK, R,C,E. MARVIN D. KIRKEBY. R,C.E, KENNETH NELSON, R,C,E, Mr. Wallace H. Byron Building Inspection Department City of Campbell 75 N. Central Avenue Campbell, Ca. SUBJECT: Jack Paulson Seven Unit Project at 540 W. Campbell Ave. Dear Sir: Please refer to the approved building and site grading and your letter for the subject building construction project in your city. At the request of the contractor, an inspection of the sub- ject site was conducted by the undersigned on October 24th, to examine and evaluate the adequacy of existing foundation materials. From our field investigation it was indicated that building construction has progressed substantially towards completion, although the site grading work is still in the rough excava- tion state. Formerly the property sloped northeasterly at less than 1.2 percent average gradient, previous to the start of pad excavation work. In the front building area, less than six inches of top soil has been removed before the actual trenching for foundations was started. At the rear building, the pad was compacted and filled approximately twenty inches. Formerly, the top 48" of soil covering consisted of a greyish bown to a pale brown, naturally well compacted fine textured gravelly, sandy silt, alluvially deposited and containing a high percentage of fractured weathered shales, serpentine, and various other igneous rock particles. With increase depth, the top soils are underlain with pale brown gravelly sandy clays and silts containing a heavier concentration of moderately weathered shale rock, greenstone, serpentine, and sandstones rocks bedded in lenses of varying thickness. The top soil can further be id8ntified generally as meeting the specification for GC, SM, and ML soil groupings according to the Unified CIVIl. " CON8TRUCTION CON8UI.T"NT8, INC. Page Two. Classification System, having a very low expansive potential (Atterberg limits plastic index rating of 0 to 5). All trench excavations were inspected and were found to be at least one inch oversized in width as compared to the dimensions which are shown on the drawing as 12 inches minimum. At the front building, the average trenching depth was determined to be 12 inches or more below the undisturbed natural grade depth within the entire building area. The rear building footings are bearing partially on the compacted fill (northeasterly side) or into the undisturbed soil (southwesterly side)again the trenching depth is twelve inches or more. In July, Terratech, Inc., of San Jose was retained by the contractor to provide compaction tests and ~rovide a report of field results for the two building pads. Enclosed is a copy of their report. In our opinion, the tests indicate that the degree of soil compaction at the foundation bottoms is uniform, and that the values obtained are representative of the natural undisturbed soil densities. Based on our field observations, it was concluded that a 2500 psf safe allowable bearing pressure under continuous footings is considered acceptable for this site. All bearing footings can be 12" wide. We have computed from the building plans that the maximum unit soil bearing pressure for live and dead loading should not exceed 1150 psf, and this loading would occur along the front and rear wall lines, only. In conclusion, we believe that the foundation construction, depth of trenching and the soil preparation work has been accomplished in an adequate and good workman like manner todate. It is recommended that this phase of construction be accepted and approved by your department. Should there be any questions regarding this subject, please contact this office.
