SAN JOSE, CALIFORNIA 95112 (408) 297-6969 January 10, 1979 Project 2501 Woolworth Construction Company P.O. Box 1399 Los Gatos, CA 95030 Attention: Mr. Ken Pasteroff Subject: Minimum Pavement Design Sections Pruneridge Village Campbell, Cal ifornia Gentlemen: As requested, we have calculated minimum pavement design sections for the interior access roads of the Pruneridge Village Condominium Development in Campbell, Cal ifornia. The surface soils at this site have low supporting capacity when used as pavement subgrade. An IIR" value of 20 at 300 pounds per square inch exudation pressure was measured on a specimen of soil fabricated from two bulk samples. The bulk samples were obtained from the western and central portions of the site between 0 and 3 feet below ground surface. To allow for construction tolerances and variations in pavement supporting capacity of the near-surface soi I across the property, an "R11 value of 15 was chosen for calculation of minimum pavement design sections. Assuming the proposed pavements will be used predominantly by automobiles and only occasionally by light commercial vehicles, we have calculated minimum pavement sections based on a Traffic Index of 3.5. We recommend that pavements for this project be constructed with a "Standard Flexible" pavement with a minimum section of at least 2 inches of asphalt concrete overlying 6 inches of Class 2 aggregate base rock or a "Full Depth" asphalt concrete pavement \'\Iith a minimum section of at least It inches asphalt concrete surfacing over 3~ inches of asphalt concrete base. We prefer the use of the "Full Depth'l asphalt concrete pavement. Inth this design, an impermeable asphalt concrete base course is substituted for the more usual Class 2 permeable aggregate base. Asphalt concrete constructed directly on the subgrade, seals the soil surface, minimizes the seepage of surface water into the subgrade and thereby reduces the possibility of pavement distress due to subgrade softening or expansion. January 10, 1979 Project 2501 -2- The use of a "Full Depth" asphalt concrete section should produce a pavement requiring less maintenance and providing better long-term service then the alternative "Standard Flexible" pavement. Pavement construction should conform to the requirements of Caltrans Standard Specifications, latest edition, except that compaction requirements for pavement soil subgrades should be based on ASTM Test D1557-70 as described in the section of our Geotechnical Investigation report for this site (Project 2501 I August 23, 1978), deal ing with Grading and compaction. Aggregate used for all asphalt concrete should at least comply with ithe requirements specified in Section 39 for Type B Aggregate. Aggregate used for asphalt concrete surfacin~ should conform to the grading specified in Section 39 for ~ inch maximum, medium grading. Very truly yours, TERRATECH I I NC. 18u-~ '1.
