CC Resolution 9747 RESOLUTION NO. 9747 A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL SUPPORTING MEASURE A OF THE SANTA CLARA VALLEY TRANSPORTATION AUTHORITY (VTA) ESTABLISHING A ONE-HALF CENT TRANSIT SALES TAX WHEREAS, the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority (VTA) Board of Directors voted on August 9, 2000 to place a half-cent transit sales tax on the November 7, 2000 General Election ballot; and WHEREAS, if approved by a two-thirds majority vote, Measure A would raise an estimated six billion dollars for transit beginning in 2006, when the existing Measure A/B sales tax expires; and WHEREAS, the tax will expire in 2036, thirty years after it is initiated; and WHEREAS, Measure A supports VTA's 2020 Transportation Plan and Expenditure Program that has been developed over an 18 month period; and WHEREAS, revenue from Measure A, which may be used only to finance transit projects, enables approximately two billion in future state and federal funds to be directed to roadway, bicycle and pedestrian projects; and WHEREAS, Measure A establishes an independent citizen watchdog committee consisting of private citizens to review all expenditures, hold public hearings and issue reports, conduct annual audits, and publish the results of the audits and annual reports; and WHEREAS, the list of transit projects that would be supported by Measure A includes connecting BART to Milpitas, San Jose and Santa Clara; building a rail connection from San Jose International Airport to BART, Caltrain and light rail; purchase of vehicles for disabled access, senior safety, and clean air; expand light rail service throughout Santa Clara County; expand and electrify Caltrain; and increase and expand bus service in key routes throughout the County. NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Campbell hereby expresses its support for the Santa Clara Valley Transportation Authority's Measure A, which will be voted on by the electorate of Santa Clara County in the November 7, 2000 General Election.
