RESOLUTION NO. 9745
BEING A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE
CITY OF CAMPBELL RECOGNIZING THE loaTH BIRTHDAY
OF THE CAMPBELL UNION HIGH SCHOOL DISTRICT
WHEREAS, two of Campbell's early settlers, the Cutting and Cooper families, recognized the
need for establishing a local high school and were major influences in the formation of the
Campbell Union High School District which was organized on August 13, 1900; and
WHEREAS, the first district school, Campbell High School, opened its doors on September
14, 1900 with a registration of 35 students, and offered a curriculum of science, mathematics,
Latin, English and history which would be labeled as a college preparatory program in today' s
educational standards; and
WHEREAS, a strong academic emphasis has persisted throughout the history of the school
district meeting the needs of a diverse student population, and the college preparatory program
remains as an important cornerstone of the district's curriculum today; and
WHEREAS, the Campbell Union High School District currently serves approximately 7,000+
students in grades 9-12 at five comprehensive sites: Del Mar, Leigh, Prospect, Westmont and
Branham High Schools, and a sixth site at Blackford High School, an alternative school
serving a variety of special needs in the community.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Campbell City Council recognize the
Campbell Union High School District on the occasion of its 100th birthday celebration on
October 28, 2000.
