RESOLUTION NO. 9474
BEING A RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL
OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL COMMENDING CHARLES P. GILLINGHAM
ON HIS RETIREMENT AS SHERIFF, SANTA CLARA COUNTY
WHEREAS, Charles P. Gillingham served the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office for 28 years
and was assigned as a Patrol Deputy, Narcotics Investigator, Jail Supervisor and Homicide
Sergeant before being promoted to the rank of Lieutenant in 1979 and the rank of Captain in
1986; and
WHEREAS, Charles P. Gillingham was appointed Sheriff by the Santa Clara County Board of
Supervisors on August 30, 1989, and was subsequently elected to the office of Sheriff in the
election of November 1990; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Gillingham was re-elected by the voters to a second four-year term in the
election of June, 1994; and
WHEREAS, during his tenure as Sheriff, Charles P. Gillingham reorganized his office's top
management and implemented strategic planning; moved to update facilities and equipment;
introduced modern law enforcement technology; upgraded officer training; and began expansion
of the Sheriff's Volunteer Reserve Unit, Technical Auxiliary, Mounted Reserve, and Explorer
Scout Post; and established a department Chaplancy Program; and
WHEREAS, Sheriff Charles Gillingham has distinguished himself as an effective law
enforcement administrator during his career with the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office.
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the Campbell City Council congratulates Sheriff
Charles P. Gillingham on his retirement from the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office, and
wishes him good health and happiness during his retirement.
