RESOLUTION NO. 8730
RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCn... OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL
EXPRESSING SUPPORT FOR COUNTY MEASURE A WHICH
PROVIDES FUNDING FOR LmRARY SERVICES
WHEREAS, libraries are an important part of the American fabric and provide important
access to information, reference material, educational literature, and recreational opportunities for
the entire community;
WHEREAS, access to information is an important aspect of the constitutional right of free
speech and self expression;
WHEREAS, a County Free Library District as defmed by the State of California
Education Code Section 19100 et seq. provides equal access to information to all people;
WHEREAS, the Santa Clara County Library District is a County Free Library District,
and provides important library services to residents of Campbell through the Campbell
Community Library;
WHEREAS, State of California budget reductions have severely impacted the funding of
County Free Library Districts, and specifically reduced revenues of the Santa Clara County
Library District by 40 percent;
WHEREAS, the Campbell Community Library has had to reduce its operating hours from
six days and 55 hours per week to five days and 37 hours per week, and reduced its book budget
to a level which is insufficient to maintain the existing collection;
WHEREAS, County Measure A proposes to partially restore lost library hours to six days
per week and 51 hours, and restore the book collection to a level of sufficiency by imposing an
assessment if approved by the voters of the district;
NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council of Campbell does hereby
resolve that it supports Measure A, an advisory measure to impose an assessment on properties
within the Santa Clara County Library District.
