CC Resolution 8229 RESOLUTION NO. 8229 RESOLUTION OF THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF CAMPBELL RECOGNIZING THE ONE HUNDREDTH ANNIVERSARY OF "EARLY SETTLERS DAY" WHEREAS, early settlers from around the Santa Clara Valley came together in the town of Campbell one hundred years ago to greet neighbors and friends for a patriotic flag raising and picnic lunch; and WHEREAS, a committee of early settlers coordinated the original luncheon, and later a committee of dedicated volunteers under the sponsorship of the Chamber of Commerce and the City of Campbell organized the event; and WHEREAS, through the years, various festivities were added, including baseball games, beauty and whiskerino contests, Footlighter plays, parades with decorated vintage cars, horse drawn carriages with pioneer settlers, school floats, drill teams, school and military bands, and the volunteer fire department; and WHEREAS, although the date of the first "Old Settlers Day" was July 4, 1892, and has changed dates and locations several times, the tradition continues today annually on President George Washington's birthday in February, and the purpose of the event has remained the same -- a time for old friends to visit and renew friendships and memories when their lives were centered in Campbell; and WHEREAS, "Old Settlers Day" is recognized as the oldest continuing public celebration in Santa Clara County, and is recognized as the second oldest public celebration in California; NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED that the City Council of the City of Campbell recognizes the One Hundredth Anniversary of the Early Settlers on February 17, 1992, and pays tribute to all of those dedicated participants who have worked to continue this tradition.
